"Good afternoon," said Bruce.
"Good to see you again, Bruce," said the man. "Please
come in. Miranda is upstairs, getting ready, you know how long women take.
Her mother was the same." The man paused, and then he asked, "Where are
you going today ?"
"We are going to Nine Wells, for a picnic," said Bruce,
"perhaps you would like to come with us ?"
"No thank you," said the man. "I am feeling rather tired
today, I think I will have a rest, but you two go ahead and enjoy yourselves.
I am very glad you and Miranda are friends. It has been lonely for her
after her mother died, and I know she misses her older brothers and sister
since they have got married and left home."
Bruce felt uncomfortable, and he thought, "I know Miranda's
mother died three years ago, but I do not want to talk about it. I hope
Miranda comes down soon. What can I talk to her father about ?" Then Bruce
had an idea.
"Can you tell me more about these dates on the wall,"
said Bruce. "Miranda said they were something to do with messages to stars."
"Well, it is rather a long story," said the man. "You
know that the stars are a long way away from Earth, and that the light
from the stars takes many years to come here."
"Yes," said Bruce, "and that is why the distance to
the stars is measured in Light Years, the huge distance that light travels
in a year."
"Right," said the man, "and radio signals travel at
the same speed. So, if a star is 10 light years away, and we send a radio
signal to it, it will be 10 years before the star receives the signal."
"The signal would be very weak after travelling such
an enormous distance," said Bruce, "and who would receive it ?"
"Ah," said the man, "we do not know. However, suppose
there are some clever people on a planet going round a star, like the Earth
goes round the Sun, and suppose that these people are listening for very
weak radio signals from planets going round other stars. Also suppose that
they have a very powerful radio transmitter ready to send a radio signal
in reply as soon as they hear something."
"Yes," said Bruce, "but what will they be listening
for, surely not a message in English ?"
"No, of course not," said the man. "The message has
to be very simple, so that anyone can recognise it, and yet clever enough
so that it does not appear to be accidental. Now, if these people receive
a message, it will be another 10 years before we hear the reply, 20 years
altogether. That is what the dates on the wall are, and you can see that
we will have to wait a few years for the next date. They are the dates
that we could expect replies from the nearest stars, to a message sent
on May 14th 1963. Ah, here comes Miranda."
