When we saw the Chinese soldiers coming
back from chasing the Koreans, I had a good idea - "Take off your
blouse."
"What ? But I have never..."
"Pretend we are on our honeymoon,"
I said quickly, struggling to get my shirt over my head, and then I realised
that she was probably too small to be wearing a bra, but too late, the
blouse was off. I quickly laid her down in the grass and started kissing
her wildly. The soldiers cheered when they came up to us, and their leader
told us to get dressed and go with them - just what I wanted. Now we were
safe from the Koreans, and hopefully we had committed some offence in China,
for which we would need to be detained - and guarded. The tallest soldier
and I used our arms to make a 'bandy chair' to carry Moon Hee. We all trudged
over the barren landscape for about an hour and then reached an army lorry
and got a ride to the nearest town.
There we were arrested, for indecency,
and locked up in the police station - and a Chinese jail is a lot better
than I would have imagined. After a while a nurse came and bandaged Moon
Hee's ankle.
Next day was hectic. Someone recognised
me from a recent picture in a French newspaper - I must remember to congratulate
'Le Monde' on its circulation, so at last the police believed our story.
The photo looked like the one on my security pass at the radar factory.
Finally I heard that the British embassy in Beijing had been telephoned.
So even this remote part of China is fairly civilised. However we still
had to face the indecency charge, and illegal entry, with no passports,
to the country which is already the most populous in the world.
I volunteered to help some of the local
children who were learning English, on condition that Moon Hee remained
with me, as I certainly did not want her to be sent back to North Korea - and
also I needed an interpreter I could trust. Fortunately Chinese people
are very practical when it comes to arrangements like this.
