The Targeted Tribe

Kamberi is the targeted tribe in Niger State. All the people of this tribe are not together in one place. They live family by family in the midst of their farm lands. They may give a name to an area where they are many, but that does not mean they settled there as a town. Those places that are now towns in Kamberi land are places where strangers have settled among them.

The Commencement of the work

The commencement of work among this tribe was with a lot of challenges. We started by making friends among this people by giving them salt and clothing. When we started our work, they were uncivilized and as a result they didn’t even know what salt is. This made salt a very precious gift to them. As at that time, most of the people usually dress half-naked which also made clothing material very precious to them. The work began in 1994 but there was a break for some years. However, in December 18th, 2007 the work began afresh. Before the break, three local Churches have been planted but when we returned to continue the work, we had only one local Church left.

The type of Work

Our works among the Kamberis are Church planting and discipleship. The work of Evangelism and follow up among these people are very tasking and challenging due to the fact that their various settlements are far from one another. They don’t live together as a community. Another critical issue is that, they always run away when people associate themselves to them. Also, their farm work takes them away because they always search for fertile farm land. As a result, the missionary needed to trek long distance or ride on motorcycle or bicycle to reach the people.

The Challenges

The first challenge the missionary faced was language. The commercial language among them is Hausa which has led to gradual extinction of the Kamberi language. To this extent the youths are not even proud of their language.

The second challenge is more missionaries that will go into the midst of the people, those that have the vision and the heart to work.

The third challenge is the rate at which denominational Churches are moving to the area due to commercial activities being carried out by the strangers among them.

The fourth challenge is that of getting leaders among existing believers who will stand to oversee the work.
